Learning from Nicole

This morning, Nicole visited us with a bag full of goodies for Wesha. Wesha was extremely interested in that bag, LOL! :D Wesha had just woken up, so she was full of energy and ready to go. Nicole showed us how to leave a trail with a piece of fine smelling cheese (while I was holding Wesha, who was protesting against being held while the cheese was being dragged away from her). Wesha obviously enjoyed following the trail (although she also once just ran off and found it by chance). The important thing is, that while following the trial, Wesha is walking slowly (good for her hind paw) and using her nose and brain (tiring her).

The next thing Nicole did, was throwing a few pieces of semi-dry dog food in the grass. It seems such a simple thing to do, but it still took Wesha a while to find them all and she kept on sniffing in our garden for another while. So it is a great way to keep her calm too.

The last exercise was a bit harder (but Wesha learned incredibly quick!!). Nicole put some dog food in a little tin. She let Wesha smell the food, then closed the tin and put it on the ground. Wesha tried everything to get to the food, but nothing worked. And then she gave up and layed down on the ground. And that is exactly what Nicole was waiting for. She immediately opened the tin, let Wesha eat the food and gave her the "free" sign. The second time, Wesha almost immediately layed down! Soooo clever! I was very proud of her! This game is the start of searching objects and pointing at them by laying down.

Thank you so much for your visit Nicole! It means a lot to us that you found the time to visit us, even though you have such a busy program this weekend. It was great to see you again and to learn these things from you.
